In Manuka we have been doing individual research
projects. The children have being
reading for research using books from the town library and learning how to do
useful Internet searches. They have
looked for key words and skimmed to find information. They took notes and then organised them into
detailed plans on large sheets of paper.
The writing focus was on detailed planning and sentence structure.
Here are the subjects the children have covered. You are
welcome to check out their blogs, read their reports and leave comments.
Maria- plant growth
Tim - the Middle Ages
Charlie - swimming
Saluni – trip to Nelson
Cody – Moving from Tauranga
Ardan – Mechanics and Machines
Tyler – World War II, and Surviving in the Woods
Mannix – swimming, also great pictures of the class at work
How do children communicate when they use technology?
Today this group of children worked on their blogs. They were all completely engaged with their blogs, with one choosing to write on paper. While they were working they talked constantly. They were talking about the content of what they were putting on and they were teaching each other how to do things to make the most of their blogs. Punctuation and spelling were also discussed as they made sure they got things right. All of the conversation was about learning. In the meantime they had another level of conversation going on through gmail. The children rated their communication during the hour they were working and agreed it was at a level of 8 to 10 (with 10 being total communication and 0 being none).
This non fiction book is about a nine year old girl called
Pippi Longstocking, who lives in Villekulla Cottage with only her Monkey and
Horse. This amazing book was written by
Astrid Lindgren and illustrated by Tony Ross.
This book is about a nine year old girl called Pippi
Longstocking who lives on her own with her Monkey and Horse. She has no parents
as her Mother died when she was just a baby and her Father when missing at sea.
So she has nobody to boss her around and tell her what to do.
Pippi is a free spirited girl and is not afraid to do anything. She is extremely strong and she has so many
wild ideas. She seems to always be getting herself into trouble.
I liked this book because I think I am quite a lot like
Pippi, like her I'm not afraid to take risks, I'm out going and free spirited
and I go with the flow just like her. What
wasn't so good about this book was that a few things dragged on and if things
drag on to long sometimes you start to lose interest.
I think the theme of this book was just to have fun and
don't be afraid about things, give everything a go. I think the point of
writing this book was to try and tell people to make the most of life and don't
waste it, just have fun and be happy. That's the message I got form the book
and I think that is what people should take on board.
Overall I really enjoyed this book and I would recommend it
for people to read, It was funny with a bit of craziness.
